Requiem Cafe has been a pillar of the LGBT community since 2019, and the need for third spaces for queer folks has only become more important and invaluable since then. Requiem was conceived first as somewhere for people in need of a safe space and a coffee shop second. While we love doing our larger collaboration events, and they keep the lights on for us, we know that having two hour lines is at odds with having a comfortable space to go to whenever you need it. The Requiem Friends Fund is a 501c3 non-profit designed to help us keep Requiem as a third space for the LGBT community without needing to rely on capitalism to make us available to those who need us.
Requiem Cafe is already intimately familiar with providing for its community and the vulnerable people who need a space like Requiem most. We regularly work with the LGBT Center of Orange County and mental health organizations to host events where the resources provided by those organizations can be accessed in a safe environment. We often hold raffles for our collaboration decorations and donate the proceeds to the Trevor Project and Trans Lifeline. Requiem has also taken the initiative to support the larger Southern California community without needing to be summoned. We provided water and shelter to protesters during the peak of Black Lives Matter, and we’ve hosted networking events to game developers who suddenly found their lives upended by industry-sweeping layoffs.
We also make sure to stay open on Christmas so that those without family can have somewhere to go where they are cared for. With the addition of our new cyber cafe, we are now able to offer access to online resources for LGBT support, activism, job searches, and so much more. However, we can’t complete our mission alone. This is where you come in.
